Practical points guide

Cash or miles? Calculate award value after taxes and fees

Compare an award with the cash ticket you would buy. Calculate value per mile after fees, check a points shortfall and include top-up costs.

By MilesVector · Updated · Methodology

How do you calculate the value of airline miles?

For a comparable trip, subtract the award's cash charges from the cash ticket price, then divide by the award points required. Multiply by 100 for euro cents per point. Unknown fees mean you cannot yet calculate a reliable value.

Is this award worth your points?

Copy a real award quote. We calculate the value after cash charges, for the same trip and all travellers. Both cash amounts must be in euros.

Blank fees mean unknown, never zero. No airport, account or airline password is needed.

This is value for this trip, not a cash value for your entire balance. Compare the dates, cabin, baggage and flexibility you would actually buy. Rewards earned on a cash ticket and cancellation differences are not included. How we calculate →

Use the cash ticket you would actually buy

Compare the same dates, airports, direction, number of travellers, cabin, baggage and useful flexibility. A flexible €900 ticket is not a fair reference if you would choose a €250 restricted fare. An upgrade should be compared with what you would pay for that upgrade, not automatically with a full premium-cabin ticket.

Use euros for both cash amounts in this tool. If a quote is in another currency, convert it consistently and account for any payment fees yourself. Do not mix a one-way award with a return cash ticket.

The formula, with a worked example

A comparable cash fare costs €250. The award is 20,000 miles plus €50. Spending miles avoids €200 in cash: (€250 − €50) ÷ 20,000 = €0.01, or 1 euro cent per mile.

That does not mean 20,000 miles can be sold for €200, or that every award gives 1 cent. It is the value of spending them on this particular quoted trip. A reward with fees higher than the cash ticket can have a negative redemption value.

What does the minimum value setting do?

The calculator starts with an editable assumption of 1.2 euro cents per point. It is a personal comparison threshold, not our claim about a programme's market value. Raise or lower it to reflect the alternatives you expect to use.

At a 1.2-cent threshold, the example's economic cost is €50 + (20,000 × €0.012) = €290, compared with €250 cash. The cash option is €40 lower in economic terms. This is not a cash fee charged for your miles; it represents the value you choose to give up.

A good quote can still be unaffordable

If you hold 15,000 miles but need 20,000, the gap is 5,000. The calculator shows the gap but does not assume the missing miles are free. Add the real purchase or transfer cost, check eligibility and confirm the seat before taking an irreversible action.

Where a programme offers several points-plus-cash options, calculate each option separately. The cheapest points price does not necessarily give the best overall result.

Check what the simple calculation leaves out

A paid ticket may earn redeemable points or status credit. The award may have different change, cancellation and no-show conditions. A voucher can have limits; a balance may be close to expiry. These can change your personal decision and are not silently included in the number.

Get the final award quote and available seats from the programme. MilesVector does not access your account, guarantee a reward or book anything. Provider cash prices can change; synthetic test prices cannot be used as real travel offers.
